Participating maker in the Saratoga Springs Satellite Reef at the Tang Teaching Museum, featured in the exhibition “Radical Fiber: Threads Connecting Art and Science.”
For this project, I experimented with free crochet (also know as freeform crochet), the process by which a person crochets without a pattern, choosing their stitch types and placements by instinct. Here, I have chosen to create a three dimensional, sculptural form out of crocheted yarn. I utilized different stitch types to emulate the different layers of sediment within a mountain range. Moreover, I juxtaposed the traditionally hard form a rock with the softness of yarn.
